Why commercial solar makes financial sense

UK commercial electricity tariffs now regularly exceed 25p/kWh for SMEs. A well-designed rooftop solar system generates electricity at an effective cost of under 6p/kWh over its operational lifetime — a structural cost advantage that compounds every year as grid prices rise.

For commercial property owners with large roof areas — warehouses, logistics centres, industrial units, retail parks — the economics are particularly strong. High daytime electricity consumption aligns naturally with peak solar generation periods, maximising self-consumption and minimising export.

Beyond direct savings, MCS-certified installations qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), providing a revenue stream for surplus electricity exported to the grid. Combined with battery storage, export can be minimised in favour of peak-period self-consumption — further improving returns.

Full Site Survey

Structural roof assessment, shading analysis, grid connection review and consumption profile analysis. Conducted at no charge, no obligation.

System Design

Bespoke array layout, inverter sizing, string configuration and yield modelling. Designed to maximise self-consumption against your specific load profile.

Financial Modelling

25-year cash flow projection, NPV, IRR and payback analysis. Scenario modelling under different tariff assumptions. Presented clearly, not buried in spreadsheets.

DNO & Grid Applications

Distribution Network Operator (DNO) applications managed end-to-end, including G99 notification, export limiting and metering arrangements where required.

MCS-Certified Installation

Installation to BS7671 and the IET Code of Practice for Grid Connected Solar PV Systems. MCS certification required for SEG eligibility and warranty validity.

Monitoring & SEG Setup

Generation monitoring system commissioned and configured. Smart Export Guarantee application submitted to your chosen licensed SEG tariff provider.

From enquiry to generating power.

01
Free site survey & energy audit

We visit your site and review 12 months of energy bills. We assess roof condition, orientation, shading from adjacent structures, and your grid connection. No charge, no commitment required.

02
System design & financial proposal

We produce a bespoke system design with yield modelling, self-consumption analysis, and a full 25-year financial projection. We present this clearly — you'll know exactly what you're agreeing to before signing anything.

03
Planning, permissions & DNO

We manage all pre-installation work: DNO notification and export applications, planning permission where required (most commercial roof installations are permitted development), and structural sign-off coordination.

04
MCS-certified installation

Installation by vetted, MCS-certified contractors working to BS7671. Typically completed in 1–3 days depending on system size. Commissioning, metering, inverter configuration and monitoring setup included.

What commercial buyers ask us.

Most commercial rooftop solar installations fall under Permitted Development rights and do not require formal planning permission. Exceptions include listed buildings, certain conservation areas, and installations exceeding specific size thresholds. We assess this during the site survey and manage any required applications.
Most commercial roof types are suitable — flat membrane roofs, profiled metal (trapezoidal), fibre cement, and concrete. We assess structural loading capacity during the survey. South-facing roofs at 10–35° produce optimal yields, but flat roofs with ballasted racking at optimal angles perform well too.
Yes. MCS-certified installations qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), which pays you for each unit of electricity exported to the grid. Rates vary by supplier. However, maximising self-consumption (using generated electricity on-site rather than exporting) typically delivers better returns, which is why we size systems carefully against your consumption profile.
Tenants can still benefit from solar, but require landlord consent. We can advise on structuring the conversation with your landlord, including how solar can increase their asset's EPC rating and capital value — making it a compelling case for both parties. Some landlords fund the installation themselves and share savings with occupiers.
From signed contract to grid-connected system: typically 8–16 weeks, with most of that time spent on DNO applications and equipment lead times. Physical installation on-site is usually 1–5 days depending on system size. We manage the timeline and keep you updated throughout.
